HerStory of Sisterhood and Service
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., becoming the first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women. Conceived by visionary Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri, Alpha Kappa Alpha was born from a desire to enrich the college experience through intellectual engagement and meaningful sisterhood. What began as a circle of like-minded women became a powerful force for academic excellence, ethical leadership, and community service.
Since its incorporation as a perpetual body in 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is comprised of more than 390,000 members in more than 1,105 graduate and undergraduate chapters located in the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, South Korea, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Guided by a mission “to be of service to all mankind,” our members are committed to uplifting communities, promoting unity, and fostering high scholastic and ethical standards.
